Few things ruin a good puff faster than a crackling, gurgling sound followed by a drop of hot e-liquid on your tongue. Vapers call it “spitback”, and it is one of the most common complaints we hear from customers in Malaysia. The good news: it is almost never a sign that your device is broken. In most cases it comes down to too much liquid in the wrong place β and you can fix it in under a minute.
What Is Actually Happening Inside the Pod?
Your coil sits inside a cotton wick soaked in e-liquid. When you fire, the coil heats the liquid touching it into vapour. If there is more liquid around the coil than it can vaporise, the excess boils and pops like oil in a hot pan. Tiny droplets then travel up the chimney and into your mouth. The gurgle you hear is liquid pooling in the airflow path. Both symptoms have the same root cause: flooding.
7 Common Causes and How to Fix Each One
| Cause | Tell-tale Sign | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pulling too hard | Gurgle mostly on long drags | Take gentler, slower puffs |
| 2. Flooded coil | Loud crackle, wet mouthpiece | Remove pod, blot the chimney with tissue |
| 3. Condensation build-up | Water droplets on pod walls | Wipe the pod and connection every few days |
| 4. Airflow too tight for the coil | Spitting on a DTL coil | Open the airflow a notch |
| 5. Wattage too low | Weak vapour plus gurgle | Raise power 1-2W within the coil’s range |
| 6. Thin e-liquid (high PG) | Happens more with salt nic | Try a slightly higher-VG blend |
| 7. Storing the device on its side | Worst after it sits in a pocket | Keep it upright when not in use |
The 30-Second Unflood Trick
For refillable pods, remove the pod from the battery, fold a piece of tissue and hold it over the bottom contacts, then give the pod two or three firm flicks downward. Blot the mouthpiece too. For sealed disposables, cover the mouthpiece with tissue, blow gently through it (without firing), then take two short, dry pulls with the airflow hole blocked. This clears liquid sitting in the chimney without starving the wick.
When It Is Time to Replace the Coil
If spitting continues after unflooding, check the coil age. A worn coil loses its ability to wick evenly, leaving hot spots that pop and crackle. As a rough rule, a pod coil used daily lasts 7-14 days. A burnt taste alongside the spitting means the coil is finished β no amount of cleaning brings it back. Fresh replacement pods and coils are available in our pod kit range.
Prevention Habits That Actually Work
- Match your liquid to your device: most pod kits are tuned for salt nic, while sub-ohm setups prefer thicker freebase.
- Do not overfill β leave a small air gap at the top of the pod.
- Let a freshly filled pod sit 5 minutes before the first puff.
- If you are tired of maintenance altogether, a sealed disposable removes most of these variables.
FAQ
Is vape spitback dangerous?
It is unpleasant rather than harmful β a tiny drop of hot e-liquid can sting your lips or tongue, but it is the same liquid you are already vaping. Fix the cause so it stops happening.
Why does my brand-new pod gurgle?
New pods are often over-saturated from priming or overfilling. Blot the chimney, take a few gentle puffs, and it usually settles down within the first day.
